Colorectal surgery isn’t a specialty people usually plan for at medical school, but once you see how much difference the right treatment makes to something patients have often been quietly putting up with for years, it’s hard to imagine doing anything else.
My training started at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals Medical School, University of London, where I qualified in 2002. Higher surgical training took me through posts across Southern England and then Australia, before I settled on colorectal and general surgery as my focus. I went on to complete an MD, a research doctorate looking at perioperative medicine, specifically how patients recover best after major abdominal surgery, followed by a fellowship in laparoscopic rectal surgery at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester.
For the past eight-plus years I’ve worked as a consultant in Torbay, dividing my time between NHS clinics at Torbay Hospital and private practice at Mount Stuart. Day surgery has become something of a specialist interest of mine: when it can be done safely, most colorectal treatment simply doesn’t warrant an overnight stay, and that principle now shapes how I plan almost every case. It’s also why I currently serve as Honorary Treasurer on the council of the British Association of Day Surgery, helping to benchmark shape national standards in this area.
None of that, though, is usually what patients tell me mattered most afterwards. What they mention is being able to speak plainly about something they’d been avoiding, and knowing exactly what happens next by the time they leave that first appointment.
